Business Cards in China business are very important, because it shows what business the person is attached to. Being a part of a larger group is important in Chinese culture.
Proper etiquette requires every business person to carry business cards with him to offer at every business meeting.
Failing to have a business card to give would be similar to refusing to shake hands in Western culture.
When meeting a new person in a business environment, each person stands up. Your business card should have English on one side and simplified Chinese on the other side. Pass your business card to the other person, using the two handed handshake, as a sign of respect. You should pass it with the Chinese language side facing up.
In Chinese culture, business cards represent who the other person is, so it is polite to read it for a moment before placing it into a business card holder. Never shove the other person’s business card into a pocket, or write something on it in his presence.
All Chinese businessmen, or Westerners visiting China, carry an ample amount of business cards with them at all times, for these are required to pass out at every meeting. The cards should be in good condition: make sure they are flat, not crumpled or bent. If your company is a large one, or it has won awards, it should be noted on the card.
The Chinese always treat their business cards and the cards of their fellow business professionals with respect. They never pass them out to several people like playing cards. They never leave a stack on the table and tell people to take one. They would never throw them on a floor, or handle them without respect.
